"Jennifer Barnes is an outstanding vocalist and educator. Her ability to play keyboards, scat sing and sell the lyrics of a song to the listener make her a bright star in the field of vocal jazz. A real musician’s musician."

"I have always had great experiences working with Jennifer. She is always focused on how to achieve the joys of making great music. Jennifer was guest conductor of the 2002 Iowa All State Jazz Choir and I loved watching her work so passionately with these top-level students. They sang beautifully for her and they particularly appreciated her special arrangement just for them! Most of all, she is easy-going, knowledgeable and accessible to all educators looking for assistance in the vocal jazz field."

Summer Workshops

Friday, March 31st, 2006 4:33 PM
The Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop (visit http://www.summerjazzworkshops.com/about.asp for more information) is where Jennifer has spent two weeks of her summer for the past six years (and Steve, too, for the past three). It is an excellent place for musicians of all ages and skill levels (literally from age 12 to 72) to come for one or two weeks to be completely immersed in jazz, particularly the art of improvisation. Every student has the opportunity to sing with an instrumental combo or rhythm section, learn more about how to listen to jazz and learn from it, study music theory, and hear fantastic jazz played and sung morning, noon and night!

Jennifer also is on the faculty of the University of North Texas Vocal Jazz Workshop (visit http://www.music.unt.edu/jazz/workshops/vocal_workshop.html for more information), along with Paris Rutherford, Rosana Eckert, Kerry Marsh and others. An outstanding week focused SOLELY on the vocalist's needs and roles in jazz.

"Jennifer Barnes is a superb musician. She is one of the great scatters you'll ever hear, and her engaging personality comes bursting through in her performance. Fortunately, Jennifer has the even rarer gift of being able to convey all of this as a teacher."

Shelly Berg
Chair of Jazz Studies, USC
